Configuring PPP under Linux for Westnet

There are multiple applications used to connect linux to the internet. These instructions are for configuring two of the more popular. Which are "usernet" and "kppp".

Please note: These instructions were tested under Red hat linux distribution versions 5.1 and 6.0, but should work for any linux version with the ppp compiled into the kernel.

What these instructions do not entail:

How to automate your connection.

How to compile the kernel.

How to configure the serial port.

How to change pppd (Point-to-Point Protocol Daemon) permission.

(Read the man or info pages on pppd if the man/info is installed. Just type "info pppd" or "man pppd" without the quotes, into any of the many terminals.)

What is needed:

PPP compiled into the kernel.

A configured serial port and modem.

User access to /usr/sbin/pppd.

A GUI installed.
