Hi,

Many of you know that I was an early user and fan of the Alta Vista search
service on the Web. I read the following article today and had to pass it
along.

Alta Vista is now offering free software to do for your hard drive what
they've done for the Internet. If you have a spare 10+ MB of space on your
Windows 95/NT system, then go to

http://www.altavista.digital.com/av/content/searchpx.htm

Regards,
Norm

AltaVista Releases Free Personal Version

If you need to search for documents, e-mail messages, or Web pages stored
on your PC, you may be interested to hear that Digital Equipment has begun
giving away a version of the AltaVista search engine for Windows 95 and NT.
The company confirmed today that AltaVista Personal 97 can now be
downloaded for free from its site.

The program builds a compact, searchable index of every
item of data in every file that your computer can read. You can then search
for words and phrases, and display found documents in a Web browser or
their native application. (To view documents from applications you don't
have, you'll need Inso's file-viewer Quick View Plus, which sells for about
$40.) The AltaVista software also provides a gateway to the AltaVista index
on the Web.

Digital was charging for AltaVista Personal, and you'll still find it for
sale in some places for as much as $60.
