Vol 1 No 1 WATPA's July Meeting at Westchester Library System Headquarters in
 Elmsford afforded attendees a behind-the-scenes
peek at WESTLYNX, the system behind the screens at our local
libraries. The entire catalog of Westchester's 38 member libraries
is now available on line, over 625,000 bibliographic works in
3,000,000 volumes. Mitch Freedman, Executive Director at WLS, told the group
that WLS
is one of over 20 such cooperative systems statewide. As
more and more libraries become Internet hosts or nodes, these
systems' catalogs will also become readily available. Terms for
interlibrary loans via this vast virtual library are evolving. Mr Freedman
announced that beginning in September, The EBSCO
Catalog featuring FULL TEXT of articles derived from over 1000
periodicals will be available. Additionally, Full-text indexes and abstracts
from 27 United States
newspapers will soon be added.
Stefi Sarnoff, Director Scarsdale Public Library and President
of the WESTLYNX Users' Group, briefed us about the increasing
emphasis on resource sharing; the goal is to deliver the best
information resources to the county at the lowest cost.

Attendees next heard from Rob Cropsey, WLS Systems Manager, who described the
hardware and telecommunications platforms supporting the system. A brief tour
of the "Tech Center" was followed by Pam Thornton's demonstration of the
WESTLYNX Graphical User Interface (GUI) terminals and the various services
provided.
