FTP: Using WS-FTP
WS FTP runs on both Windows 3.1 and Windows 95, and is available as a .Zip file (which requires a program such as PK-Zip or WinZIP to use) and a self-extracting .exe file. If you need further information on downloading files, see our Download Help Pages.
It allows you to put in your user
name and your password. It also allows you pick a local (your machine)
directory and a remote directory to start in. The default is for it to be
the directory that has WS_FTP on your machine and the WestNet machine will
route you right to your home directory when you log in.
The MKDIR button is used to make a directory. The CHNGDIR button changes the directory. The REFRESH button is like the RELOAD button in your web browser.
When you are transferring anything other than a plain text document (this includes word processor specific formats like .doc, .wpd, .sam, etc.) you must make sure that the BINARY/ASCII toggles are set to Binary otherwise the transfer will not work.
Also, when you FTP something up to WestNet, like a web page, you do not have to worry about changing permissions (chmod command). This is done for you automatically. If you don't want executable permissions on files, telnet in and change them after the files are transferred.
