Persistence Pays

Westchester PathMaster (TM) has two recent demonstrations of the old adage,
“persistence pays.”

At the April meeting, Irene Herz shared with us the current state of her
efforts with the League of Women Voters. After sever months of frustration,
Irene was finally able to break through that organization’s reluctance to
focus on creating an effective Web-based message to its constituents. I
suspect that we’ll shortly have a very effective set of Web pages. Thanks,
Irene!

A couple of months ago, Norm Liss and I paid a visit to the Executive
Director of the Westchester Arts Council. They have a technically oriented
volunteer, who’s developing a Web site for them. WAC has posted an interim
Web page on Westchester PathMaster (TM). After numerous phone calls, they
also included WATPA’s effort in the May 1996 edition of “Arts News,” (Vol.
12 No. 5), that was distributed on Friday to at least part of the county.
The feature article, Art’s Place in Cyberspace, begins on the cover page,
but the bulk of the article appears on page 10. On the possibility that some
WATPA members may not have seen the article, I’ll repeat the main portion
here:

“ Today, it is possible for ‘The Westchester Arts World and You’ to go on
line. Many of the County arts and cultural institutions may be visited at
their website locations on the World Wide Web (WWW).

“The Maiden Voyage: Going On-line:
Becoming established on the Internet beast may seem daunting, but for those
with little experience, and for those experts with the occasional problem,
there is a help. County not-for-profit arts organizations wishing to “get
three arts on line” or to consult about a Web system they may already have in
place, can contact The Westchester Alliance for Telecommunications and Public
Access (WATPA) and the Westchester Library System (WLS). WATPA and WLS can
help you:
· get started on line
· establish an operational Web site
· gain access to an effective on-line Community Information Directory to help
locate Westchester County Information
· set up an appropriate Web page.

“Westchester Arts Organizations: Websites
Many local arts groups are in their nascent stages with regard to their
Website/homepage development -- their location on the Internet. But a few
have their sites up and running. If the saying ‘art mirrors life’ holds
true, by the end of the year, the number of arts groups on-line should
increase dramatically. visit these arts organizations while surfing the Net:
“Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, Inc.

“Hudson River Museum
· http://www.hrm.org
Works from the permanent collection of Hudson River Museum can be visited at
‘Viewseum,’ a site on the World Wide Web created by Hitachi America, Inc.

“Lyndhurst Museum
http://www.hitachi.com
Lyndhurst is also part of Viewseum. See description under Hudson River
Museum.

“Westchester Arts Council

This is the Council’s WATPA Website address.”

PS. We processed three Web page nomination last week, and received in this
afternoon’s mail the Web page nomination materials from a self-help
organization that responded to Norm Liss’ cable program.
