> WASHINGTON (November 21, 1997 00:29 a.m. EST http://www.nando.net) - The
White House expressed dismay Thursday that President Clinton's personal fax
number was put on the Internet briefly by a House committee.
>
> The House Government Reform and Oversight Committee, investigating
alleged campaign finance abuse, put the number on the Internet for about 90
minutes on Tuesday as part of a transcript of a deposition of former
Clinton political adviser Dick Morris.
>
> Morris provided the number on condition it would be kept secret but the
number was not blacked out when the deposition was placed on the Internet.
The Republican-run committee said the publication was a mistake and quickly
removed the number when the error was pointed out.
>
> Clinton uses the fax right outside the Oval Office to stay in touch with
old friends and acquaintances from across the country, to try to keep him
in touch with the world outside of Washington.
>
> "Obviously that would be a source of concern to the White House, because
that's a very valuable way in which the president maintains contact with an
incredibly diverse group of Americans," said White House spokesman Mike
McCurry.
>
> He said the White House will now have to change the number and try to
track down all of the people who use it.
>
> As for the error, McCurry said: "It's not the first time that they've had
some procedural lapses."
