Will their be another mad rush for domain names?

SEVEN NEW WEB DOMAIN SUFFIXES OFFERED; REGISTRATION OPENED
The Internet Society said Wednesday that it has opened seven new
domain-name suffixes, and that it has also authorized 28 different
companies to register new Web addresses, a task that previously was
handled only by one entity, Network Solutions Inc.

The new suffixes are: .web (for Web-related matters), .info (for
information services), .firm (for companies), .store (for retailers),
.arts (for culturalactivities), .rec (for recreational activities)
and .nom (for individuals'personal home pages).

The new suffixes will complement the current .com (for commercial),
.net (for Internet services),.org (for organization), .edu
( reserved for educationalinstitutions), .gov (reserved for government)
and .mil (reserved for the military).

An estimated 900,000 Web addresses are already registered, of which
about 90% have the .com suffix. The society hopes that the new
commercial suffixes will free up the logjam. An estimated 85,000
new Web addresses are registered monthly.

The Internet Society is allowing new U.S. registrars of domain names
because Network Solutions had a monopoly. Those new registrars will
begin operating by the end of the year.
