Server Addresses
The following information is necessary to configure Internet software for
WestNet. Before using this information, you should see if we have specific
information for your package on our New Users page.
Your IP Number:
IP numbers are assigned dynamicly. Most software defaults to this
configuration. MacTCP users should select Obtain Address from Server.
However, you will have a static domain name assigned to your machine,
no matter what modem you are dialed in to. This will be of the form
username.dialup.westnet.com . For example. mine would be
chris.dialup.westnet.com .
Phone Numbers
WestNet has dial-up locations in Rye and Yorktown, serving lower and upper
Westchester respecively. You should pick the dial-up closer to you.
In addition, each location has two published phone numbers: A regular one,
and one for people with US Robotics modems. Please only use the US Robotics
modem if you have a US Robotics Sportser or Courier modem.
The dialup phone numbers are:
- 967-7802 - Rye
- 967-7356 - Rye, US Robotics modems
- 245-0025 - Yorktown
- 245-0796 - Yorktown, US Robotics modems
Addresses and Other Information
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway/Terminal Server: First, try leaving this blank. Most
software will determine the address automaticly. If this doesn't work, the
addresses are:
- In Rye: 206.24.6.4
- In Yorktown: 206.28.202.18
Domain name; westnet.com
Primary Domain Name Server (DNS): 206.24.6.2
Secondary DNS Server: 206.24.6.9
POP mail server; westnet.com
SMTP server or SMTP relay host: westnet.com
News (NNTP) server: news.westnet.com
If asked for mail account information, or POP username/password, enter
your regular username and password.
If asked for a news username, login id, or password, leave
those fields blank.
Our gopher server is gopher.westnet.com.
Our www home page is http://www.westnet.com/
For SLIP. the mtu size is 1006.
For PPP, the mru size is 1500.
If you are using Trumpet Winsock, use the following values:
- MTU: 1024
- TCP RWIN: 3936
- TCP MSS: 984
We ask that all users subscribe to the Westnet.* local newsgroups. It is
especially important that you subscribe to Westnet.announce and Westnet.slip .
General information about the system, such as scheduled down-time, will be
posted here. Westnet.slip will provide information about slip/ppp services,
Westnet.slip is also the place to post questions about the set-up of your
slip software.
