Configuring Netscape Navigator Personal Edition for WestNet

These instructions assume you want to use the dialer that comes with the Personal Edition.

1) Following the directions in chapter 1 of the manual, perform a Typical Install.

2) In the Netscape Personal Edition folder, click on the Registration Wizard. Click on 'OK' in the title window. When asked for an Account Type, select "Use Existing Account".

3) The Registration Wizard has three sections: Account Setup, Modem Setup, and Dialing Setup. Each section is organized into pages, with Next and Back buttons to go from page to page. We will tell you what to place in each box. We will indicate page breaks with <Next>. Information you must provide, such as your name, will be indicated with comments as so: (your name).

4) Account Setup:

Type your service provider name: WestNet
Name: (Your full name)
Organization: WestNet Internet Services

Login Name: (the username you signed on to WestNet with)
Password:
(You may place your password in this box to automatically log in. However, this means anyone with access to your computer can log in as you. If you leave this box blank, you will be prompted for you password whenever you dial in.)

Telephone Number:

Enter the appropriate phone number for your area and modem. Please only use the numbers marked US Robotics if your modem is a US Robotics Sportster or Courier.

Specify the IP address of the DNS server used by your service provider:
206.24.6.2

If a Secondary DNS server exists, you may enter that as well:
206.24.6.9

Please provide the name or IP address of you mail and news servers:

POP Server: westnet.com
SMTP Server: westnet.com
NNTP Server: news.westnet.com

Bring up TTY window when connected: (Check this box)

Click on <Finish> if everything is correct.

6) Dialup Setup: These options are not specific to WestNet. Follow the directions given in each window.

7) Back on the main menu, click on 'Continue'. A window will come up asking what file to save the configuration under. The default should be 'westnet.sr'. Click on 'Continue' to accept this default.

8) It will say "Congratulations! You are done!". However, you are not.

9) To automate the dial-in procedure, you will have to edit the westnet.sr file by hand. You can do this with the Windows Notepad, which can be found in the Accessories folder. Use the notepad to open c:/netscape/dialer/westnet.sr

10) At the bottom of this file, skip a blank line and append the following five (5) lines:

11) In the Netscape folder, click on 'WestNet Dialer'. From here, you can dial in and start using the Internet! The manual and electronic guides should help you in using Netscape and Eudora.

12) Netscape, by default, connects you are start-up to the Netscape home page. As a WestNet user, you may with to connect to our home page instead. On the Netscape menu bar, select 'Options'. The 'Window and Link Style' menu should be displayed. If not, use the drop-down box at the top to view 'Window and Link Styles'. In the entry field for Home Page Location, type: http://www.westnet.com/

13) Under 'Images and Security' you may also wish to disable all Security Alerts. Netscape, by default, warns you whenever you are submitting data to a non-encrypted server. Since most www forms contain non-critical data, this can become annoying.

14) While Netscape can do a lot of things, there are some other programs you may find useful for browsing the Internet. You can find these in the WestNet public files area. From the WestNet home page, click on the 'Public Files" Icon, then select Windows Programs. Some useful programs are:

Whichever program you use to read news, it is a good idea to read the local newsgroups, Westnet.*, regularly. Not only will announcements and updates about the system be posted there, but you can get to know other users in the area! If you wish to use Netscape to read news, instructions can be found in the Getting Started manual starting on page 24.
