WestNet Backup Settings
Customize WestNet Backup for your use.

There are a number of settings defining the way WestNet Backup operates. You can modify them any time you wish. Select Settings command at the File menu and Settings window will appear. There are the following settings pages in WestNet Backup:

  1. General page.

  2. Hotkeys page.

You can set your own shortcut keys for the comfortable use of WestNet Backup. For this you have to select a menu command, for which shortcut key you want to change. Set your pointer on the "Hot Key edit box", type your shortcut key, and press the "Assign" button.

  3. Connections page.

During backup on a remote FTP Server, WestNet Backup connects to InterNet. Setup your dial-up and proxy settings here. There are basically two ways to establish a connection to the backup server:

    • Dial-up connection - Usually we use a "Dial-up connection" at home, or on the road. You have to select the name of your existing connection in the combo box "Connect using" and enter your username and password. Double click on "My Computer", then "Dial-up Networking" to setup the dial-up parameters.
    • Local network - Usually we use a "Local network" in a company, or if you have a permanent connection to the Internet. Often companies use "proxy servers" to protect the local network from outside attacks. Contact your System Administrator to get information about your proxy servers.

  4. Encryption keys page.

You can manage the database of encryption keys you used to encrypt backup archives.

    1. Generate a new encryption key. Press the "Create new key..." button for this.
    2. Show Hint of the key.
    3. Options, which allow to print a key code of the selected key and import the key code back into the Software. It gives you one more level of insurance you won't lose your encryption keys

IMPORTANT NOTE: You MUST be very careful with your encryption keys.  If you lose them, you will NEVER restore your files.  That's why you MUST make a few copies of them, and locate them in a few safe places (away of your computer). This is VERY IMPORTANT because you can restore your files only if you have the encryption keys!  We recommend you use Repair wizard to copy them (and the WestNet Backup configuration) to other storage locations.

  5. Logs page.

An email can be sent after a backup process has finished. You can configure where the email log will be delivered by typing the email information below. To disable feature, just leave (From/To:) blank. You can insert more than one e-mail address, but each one must be separated by a semicolon (;).

There are basically two methods to send an email message:

    • Use the built-in Windows MAPI subsystem - WestNet Backup uses the universal interface to MAPI-compliant default mail client to send an email message. It uses the default MAPI profile. The mail will only delivered if there is a single defined MAPI profile on the computer.
    • Direct connection to SMTP/POP3 servers - WestNet Backup directly connects to a standard SMTP/POP3 server and sends an email message through it. You have to enter addresses and ports of the SMTP and POP3 servers; the username and password to login to the POP3 account. Contact the system administrator of your SMTP/POP3 server to get the following information.

You can specify your POP3 account because some email servers (like Yahoo!) need POP3 authorization before sending of email messages.

  6. Backup page.

WestNet Backup supports 2 modes to make incremental backups:

    1. Normal mode - In this mode, WestNet Backup backs up entire new or changed files, no matter how small changes you have done within them. It takes the usual amount of space and on 100% secure, because each backup archive is independent and can be restored even if some backup archives were lost.

If you backup on FTP Server in this mode, you can limit a number of stored versions of a backed up file. WestNet Backup automatically deleted too old versions. If you set "0" as the limit, WestNet Backup will disable the limit.

    2. Patch mode - If you use the patch mode, WestNet Backup finds the changes you have made within your files and backup only them. It takes much less storage space than usual, but you must have all backup archives to restore. Also you can specify a list of file types to be used with patch mode. Other files will be backed up by using the normal mode.

  7. Backup of open files page (Windows NT/2000/XP).

To backup open files you have to install a special kernel driver. Here you can install and uninstall this driver. You have to reboot to apply changes.
