Timeline, Wildlife Conservation Society, founded in 1895 as New York Zoological Society. Bronx Zoo-based WCS has been around and involved in nature conservation longer than most non-governmental organizations. I find it amusing and telling that non-zoo based organizations such as Conservation International and the Wildlife Trust have affiliated with the American Zoo and Aquarium Association, the trade association for zoos and aquariums in the United States.

Findarticles.com, aka LookSmart. Eclectic, increasingly useful aggregation of journal and newsletter content. Even with embargos on recent content, FindArticles can be helpful as substitute for document delivery and interlibrary loan. Graphic: Cambridge Z88 laptop computer, made in Scotland, circa 1988. It weighs two pounds, runs 20 hours on 4 AA batteries, and stores programs and files in ROM, EPROM and RAM. Software supplied in ROM included diary, calendar, spreadsheet, wordprocessing, and terminal emulation. When Clive Sinclair was asked why he put an 8 bit CPU, a Z80, in the Z88, he allegedly said he couldn't find a 4 bit chip that he liked. As in the case of similar laptop computers--the Tandy 100/102 comes to mind--the Z88 attracted a coterie of devoted users, despite the fragility and the quirkiness of the device. More recently, ubiquitous handheld personal digital assistants seem to have co-opted the niche for an ultra lightweight computer with real keyboard and non-Windows operating system.
