Some follow up details on the Union game yesterday.  The guys came out to
play early, which was nice given some distractions.  A stomach bug sidelined
Mike Frissora, and limited Dave Seeley, 4 other players missed due to
injury, including Greg Bastis who pulled a hamstring vs. Wesleyan.  Bastis
is questionable for our game vs.
Amherst this weekend.

We dominated the 1st Quarter opening up a 7-1 lead.  Matt Dunn was dominant
scoring and assisting, ending the game at 3G's/3A's, playing a little over
half the game.  We continued to generate shots in the 2nd and 3rd but their
goalie came up big as we knew he could and it slowed our scoring.  There was
probably a slip in concentration and details as well which contributed.  We
took an 8-3 lead into halftime and outshot them 18-3 in the 3rd Quarter to
take a 11-3 lead.  Their goalie made 21 saves on the day, many of them in
the 2nd and 3rd.  We subbed most of the team in the 3rd Quarter and they
scored late in the 3rd and 4 in the 4th (3 of them very late) to make the
score respectable.

Brian McGregor had a great day facing off, winning 19 of 26 without his top
2 wing men Frissora and Bastis.  Dunn was exceptional as I said earlier.
Dave Leach had a great day filling in for Bastis and Frissora, running the
field, playing excellent on-ball defense and scoring a goal-he won the game
ball for his efforts.  It was exciting to see Sebby Astrada return to action
for the defense after having his shoulder pop out in the
Springfield game
diving to beat an attackman to the endline for a shot back up.  He has
missed all of our games since then.  Freshman Will Rawson has begun to play
full-time as our long stick midfielder and has played great for us.  He is
smart and athletic and has started at close D (vs.
Gettysburg) and LSM.
Brian Phinney is another frosh LSM who shows promise.  He had a great
freshman hockey season and is just starting to come into his own in
lacrosse.  He is very athletic and tenacious.  As he continues to improve it
gives us two very athletic freshman long sticks in the midfield and also
gives us the flexibility to play Rawson at close or LSM.

Some back up midfielders have looked good in practice and played well
yesterday.  Bob Wannop is a sophomore from
Woodstock, VT who was cut as a
freshman, hung in there and tried out again this year.  He filled in as a
defensive middie and played excellent defense, made smart decisions and
scored on an excellent shot (he is a smart player and was smart enough to
realize if Matt Dunn is being covered by a short stick he will find you open
off-ball if you can get open!)  Ben Tobey is a sophomore converted attackman
and Pat Kane is another sophomore.  They looked particularly good because
both are exceptionally quick.  If we are missing anything in our starting
offensive midfield it is a quick complement to Matt Dunn.  Christopher Davis
is strong and smart with a very hard shot, Grayson Fertig is athletic and
also has a strong shot, Jamie Duke has great vision and stick skills; none
of these guys have exceptional speed however.  Look for the possibility of
Tobey or Kane getting some spot duty and getting the chance to dodge a short
stick.  We might insert them and get a play to isolate them on a short stick
for a quick dodge.  This might not happen if Senior Peter Albro returns from
a fractured leg, which might happen in Thursday's practice.  He would give
us the quick middie with an excellent shot, but with more experience than
the two sophomores.

Day off today, next game is Saturday vs.
Amherst.  They are young but
talented, their freshman class is excellent.  We hope to have a scout on
them against Union Thursday.  On Sunday the team is participating in a 5K
run to help raise funds for a local project, a new lacrosse/soccer field for
the town.  They are raising money through pledges and running the 5K race
with the local high school boy's and girl's lacrosse teams.  It will be a
nice way to integrate our team with the local lacrosse community.

Keep the Alumni Weekend responses coming!  I will publish the guys that have
responded within a couple of days, as a reminder if you cannot remember if
you did so and so you know who else will be attending.  Dinner Saturday
night will be at
6:00pm and will be grilled salmon and grilled chicken
breasts.  Our players and parents will attend the dinner as well.  After
dinner alumni and guests will hang out in Kenyon Lounge for a cocktail
party.  Game time Sunday is
11:00AM.  Hope many of you can attend!
