Middlebury defeated Colby 19-6 at Kohn Field this past Saturday.  It was a
little cold as the sun went down after the start of the game, but the
Astroturf field again has proven its worth, as a Vermont team and a Maine
team played in Vermont on March 17!

We were much stronger than Colby, but they will not be a bad team this year.
We are preaching playing against our own standards and not our opponents, I
do not know if we met those standards, but we did play at a high level.  The
starting attack was dominant with Holt Hopkins going 5/1, Dave Seeley 2/4,
and Zach Herbert 3/1.  We were up 17-3 fairly early in the 3rd Q, so those
guys are getting those points in about 1/2 of play.

Jamie Haire continued to be outstanding in the midfield with 2 goals and 2
assists.  With Matt Dunn back from hockey the first midfield line is Haire,
Bryan Sanchez and Matt Dunn.  Sanchez has not been scoring, but has drawn
the long stick.  It will be difficult for teams to decide which player to
longstick.  The 2nd and 3rd lines played well also, giving balance to the
scoring.  As usual, the unsung heroes were the defensive midfielders.  John
Rice is a senior short stick d-middie who is as good as a long stick on the
ball.  He is paired with Greg Bastis, a freshman.  Both have great speed,
strength and athletic ability.

Goaltending has been solid with Eric Krieger, Patrick O'Reilly and Sotheby
Chung all playing in each of the two games thus far.  We have not been
tested yet at the defensive end, however, so the goalies and close defense
have bigger challenges ahead.

The next game is Saturday, March 24 at home at 1:00.  We are actually on
spring break for that game, and we will leave immediately after the game to
go to Maryland where we will play Washington College at Washington College
on March 28 at 3:00.

Hopefully I will have time to give you a preview on the Connecticut and
Washington games before the end of the week.
