The Ritter Family

Essie Atherton

Thanks for doing such an amazing job organizing the tournament.  My family enjoyed being part of the Middlebury lacrosse family, which made the trip all that much better.  Following Vail, we headed into the Rocky Mountains, hiked the continental divide, saw moose, mountain sheep and herds and herds of elk. It was quite spectacular and almost as good as the lacrosse.

For those who couldn't make it, I thought the caliber of play on the Supermaster side was much higher than last year, especially with the last two games being so competitive.  On the offensive end, there were many impressive feats including Greg Wheeler's five goals in one game -- I've always heard about his scoring prowess and now I've finally seen it. And how about Bobby Ritter scoring right-handed; or Mark Chafee's two goals following long jaunts from his defense position, making all the difference in an 11-10 game.  Of course, Middlebury lacrosse has never just been about offense.  One of the most courageous acts was Chip Clark sucking it up to play two games in one day right after a trip to the emergency room with altitude sickness.  John Burchard still plays like a beast despite all the yoga he practices on the sidelines.  And Roy Heffernan still runs the field with a grace unmatched by anyone, with the exception of youngster John Atherton.  It all makes me look forward to next year.

An amusing recollection from the defensive side of the field relates to the incessant inquiries about Mark Chaffee's age by the opposing attackmen after his mad rushes up the field.  Given his speed and the fact that he was hiding behind that black Darth Vader visor, they all thought he was a "young" ringer!!!

Oddly enough, none of the opposing attackmen inquired about my age.

I also wanted to say thanks and sorry that I couldn't attend the last game because of a little kids clinic. I also ended up getting x -rays/catscan because of that hit I took in the waning moments of Sunday's second game. I thought I might have punctured my kidney. The good news is that I didn't, but broke 2 ribs on my lower right side. Bummer ! Anyway, thanks Bobo for all that you did, I will heal and be there next year !!
