John F. McMullen

Biography

John F. McMullen is Executive Vice President, McMullen & McMullen, Inc., a 20 year-old consulting firm, leader of the Y2K Coaching Staff, and is a writer, teacher, consultant, and cyberspace researcher. He is the creator and maintainer of The Web Wizard's Sites, a fan of Law & Order and Dorothy Parker, the initial developer of the chartity-based Web site, Kids4Kids, a noted "triviate", and has been an active participant in the exploration of on-line text-based virtual reality. He used such a platform to teach the first on-line course offered by Marist College) . He is also an active participant in other text-based virtual realities (such as MediaMOO, Snow and Tecfa) and describes himself alternately as a "denizen of cyberspace" and a "technology evangelist".

McMullen has previously served as Executive Director of Eagle Academy, Technical Director of the Center for Information Technology in Education (CITE) and Technical Editor of the Marist College World Wide Web System during the implementation of the current system. He is program chair of the Westchester / Fairfield chapter of the ACM and designed and maintains the home page for the chapter.

He holds a Bachelor's degree in English from Iona College, a Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems from Marist College and a Master's degree in Public Administration, Criminal Justice, also from Marist. He has taught at Marist College, New York University, Westchester Community College, Monroe College, and The New School For Social Research.

McMullen has been involved with computer systems since 1961 and has been a director of information systems for large corporations, including Dean Witter & Co., the Davidsohn Group, and Morgan Stanley, was an officer of Davidsohn Computer Services and Brokerage Transactions Services, Inc. (BTSI) and a principal (with Barbara E.McMullen) in the consulting firm, McMullen & McMullen, Inc. His consulting clients have included IBM, Apple Computer, The New York City Board of Education, Merrill Lynch, Citibank, John Wiley & Sons, the Government of Mexico, the State of New Hampshire, and The Valley Market.

He is the co-author of one of the first books on microcomputer telecommunications and over 1,000 news and magazine articles . He is a columunist for the Westchester and Fairfield Business Journals and his work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Newsbytes, PC Magazine, InfoWorld, Lear's, National Review, Popular Computing, Computer Shopper, Home Office Computing, PC Clones, Computers and Electronics, A+ and he has been a contibutor to "Digital Deli" and "The Encyclopedia of Computer Science". He has also authored or co-authored papers on the educational uses of MOOs for presentation at various educational conferences.
