If you are travelling to the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula
or the northernmost rim of the Gulf of Nicoya you will want
to consider taking the ferry. There are three of them where
two depart from Puntarenas, and where the third crosses the
Tempisque River at the end of the Gulf. Puntarenas is the
port city in the Gulf of Nicoya. One ferry goes to Naranjo
and the other further up the peninsula to Paquera. There are
first class decks with a/c. available and the trips are comfortable
and scenic. The Naranjo ferry takes about an hour, the Paquera
ferry takes about an hour and a half. The ferries are punctual.
The Tempisque ferry ride takes just five minutes. These ferries
can have long lines waiting for them on Fridays and Sundays
so plan accordingly.
