COSTA RICA is in good shape!

A perennial spring like climate and an average temperature of 22'C or 72'F, makes Costa Rica a very attractive tropical setting.

Four kinds of tropical forests, beautiful beaches on both coasts, seventeen micro-climates, 855 species of birds, 221 species of mammals, and 12,000 species of plants, are among the natural assets of this small paradise.

Costa Rica has no army since it was constitutionally abolished in 1949. After two nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize, this honor was finally awarded to Costa Rica in 1987, through the person of then-president, Oscar Arias.

San José counts on a large number of excellent museums, at least 15 theaters permanently staging plays, and over 30 cinemas showing the latest international films.

For music lovers, there is also a great deal to chose from. The National Symphony Orchestra performs regularly throughout the season, while other ensembles play year-round. Pop groups playing jazz, English and Spanish rock, experimental music, salsa, reggae and socca music, can be regularly heard in concerts, restaurants and bars.

Costa Rica is a less expensive place to live than any European or North American city. All things considered, for over a period of 3 or 4 months, the lower cost of living in Costa Rica would compensate for the extra travel expenses, when compared with studies in Spain.

Originally founded in 1975 as a college of the first private university in Costa Rica, Universidad Veritas is now and independent university, with an excellent recognition within the Latin American academic community.

Located in the eastern part of San José, ten minutes away from downtown, Universidad Veritas has over two thousand students enrolled in six different degree programs. Courses and degrees awarded by the Unversidad Veritas have been transferred to universities around the world. This includes credits earned by Spanish students at I.E.E.

The "Instituto de Español para Extranjeros" and its "Total Immersion" concept, offers the opportunity to participate and share in everyday life and ideas with Costa Rican culture.

With a high academic level program at an accredited university such as Universidad Veritas, foreign students find a very practical and well organized way to earn credits and at the same time have fun. Another important feature of I.E.E. is the international composition of the student body, regularly enrolling students from 8 to 15 different countries.

All eight levels are organized into four-week study-units, consisting of 20 hours per week, following a natural progression. The first day of class, new students take a placement test in order to place them in one of the first eight levels. Students may begin at any determined level and continue, as long as they obtain a passing grade. After satisfactorily completing any individual 80 hour study-unit, students will be awarded a certificate indicating a grade and the number of credits earned.

To enrich the learning process, advanced levels will complement their linguistic course, with basic courses in Costa Rican and Latin American History, Literature and Tropical Ecology.

To encourage cross-cultural communication and in order to help students become more involved in Costa Rican culture and lifestyle, the I.E.E. offers choices in accommodations with local families. Host families have been selected for their interest in cultural exchanges. Many other housing alternatives are offered to our students, such as individual or shared apartments. Housing with a family is US$330 and it includes individual room, breakfast, one other meal and laundry. Monthly apartment prices may vary from US$250 up to US$650 per student.
