Lakes Costa Rica

There are several lakes that make beautiful day trips. Some lend themselves to fishing and boating and other recreational activities.

    Lago San Juan Laguna de Fraijanes Arenal Lake
    This is Costa Rica's largest lake and it also offers the most activities for the tourist. It is located near the Arenal Volcano, an active volcano with a perfectly cone shape. There is fishing for rainbow bass (guapote) a very challenging fish. Windsurfers from around the world come here to enjoy the near-perfect conditions in March.

    Lake Caño Negro
    This lake is interesting because of its protected status. The Caño Negro National Park offers a beautiful foray into virgin wilderness.

    Lake Nicaragua
    Although this lake is not in Costa Rica, it's mentioned because its outstanding features. This is the largest lake in Central America, with islands and even an island that has an active volcano. Sharks are found here which were previously thought to have been the only freshwater species in the world, but they were later found to be Tiger sharks that swam up the San Juan river. An expedition to this lake is a beautiful and rewarding experience.
