Guide to searching

Only lowercase words are considered. Words enclosed in double quotes (e.g. "manic street preachers") are, regretfully, not recognised as joined. It does, however, imply searching for Web pages that contain manic, street and preachers, which is usually what you want. (Technically, this is known as a Boolean AND search). On the other hand, you may search for manic or street or preachers.

You may also search for manic not (street or preachers), to find all Web pages that contain the word manic and do not contain the words street or preachers. You can search for word stems with *. Thus a search for preach* will return pages that contain the words preach, preaches, preaching and so on.

At least, that is the theory... the exact method by which SWISH ranks the various hits seems a little strange at times. If a phrase generates too many replies, you may need to simplify the phrase, rather than adding more descriptions. Further, the not operator doesn't always do what is expected. You have been warned!

Technical information is available from the author of SWISH.

Ethical note

The program keeps a record of the search phrases that people enter, as well as how many hits were returned and if there were any errors. If you don't like this policy, don't use this search facility! The reason we do this is so that from time to time we can gather these statistics and profile them, in order see if there are patterns that can show us ways we can improve the service. Thank-you.

I would appreciate your feedback should you feel inclined.
