REVIEW: Various Artists, Celtic Graces (hemisphere/I.R.S.)
- Chantal Pecourt
The newest release by hEMIsphere Records is entitled Celtic Graces: A Best of Ireland. For those who have enjoyed music from groups such as the Chieftains, this new album will not disappoint. Artists such as Clannad, Planxty, The Bothy Band, Paul Brady & Andy Irvine, Donal Lunny, Kevin Burke and Delores Keane contribute to making this album an enjoyable listen by combining their many talents with a modern and semi-modern selection of pieces. With most of the songs having a decidedly modern air, the rich and still growing culture from Ireland is conveyed. Starting with the rich music from the Irish pipes to the sweet tones of more modern arrangements that combine the best of the past and the present, this arrangement offers a wide over view of Irish melodies.
Expecting more of a traditional approach to Irish melodies, one is surprised to find pipes combined with modern instruments such as the synthesizer. The effect is interesting and not altogether unpleasant. Lacking some of the ethereal quality that one can find in such artists like Enya or Loreena McKennitt, this album isn't for those who prefer the haunting quality of music that these artists produce. Yet for those who prefer a more modern and rustic version of Irish music, this album is sure to please. The songs are light and joyful with a decidedly upbeat and amused tone.
Celtic Graces comes out just in time for St. Patrick's Day and is sure to please anyone who wants to enjoy the modern music of Ireland.
