What Is WestNet ?

This is a little something I wrote when WestNet first started, back in 1994. Then it was an introduction to a small BBS system.

WestNet has grown a bit since then, so recently I went to update this file. After reading, though I've decided that everything it says still stands, and there isn't much more I could add.

WestNet has two main purposes. Our first goal is to provide reliable Internet access at a reasonable cost. This isn't hard. All that it requires is some equipment and a few phone lines.

Our second goal is to foster a sense of community among our users. This is a little more difficult. I have seen Internet access systems where the users logged in and did their business, but had not idea who else used the system.

This to me seems counter to the whole point of the net: communication. What good is it to be able to communicate with people in Guam if you don't talk to your neighbors?

I encourage people to use the local discussion groups. Ask questions. Give answers, if you know them. If you have a question you don't want to ask publicly, just send me mail. My user id is simply 'chris'.

I look forward to hearing from you!
