Windows NT and WestNet
This page offers information on how to set up a PPP connection to
WestNet on Microsoft Windows NT Workstations and Servers 3.5 and 3.51.
Introduction
Although Windows NT looks just like Windows 3.1, it doesn't act
like it at all. To connect to the Internet using NT you must use Windows
NT's Remote Access Service ("RAS"). These instructions cover how to
configure RAS to work with WestNet and how to automate the logon
procedure.
NOTE: These instructions are only good for the versions listed
above and are not guarenteed to work on Version 4.0. For Version 4.0,
you should use the Windows 95 instructions or refer to the Version 4.0
documentation.
Instructions
- Install RAS in Windows NT.
- Start the Remote Access client software either by using the
program icon which can be found in the "Remote Access Service" program
group.
- Create a new RAS Phone Book entry by doing the following:
- Choose the Add button to create a new entry in the RAS Phone Book.
- Name the entry WestNet and use one of the following phone numbers:
- Clear the "Authenticate using current user name and password" check
box. Now choose Advanced.
- Choose Network
- Select PPP and TCP/IP and disable NetBEUI and IPX by clearing their
check boxes.
- Clear the "Request LCP extensions (RFC 1570)" check box.
- Choose TCP/IP Settings and input the following:
- Server Assigned IP Address
- Specify Name Server Address:
Primary: 216.187.52.23
Secondary: 216.187.52.24
- Use the default gateway on remote network
- Highlight the new entry in your phone book and choose Dial.
- Put your user name and password in the appropriate field.
REMEMBER: WESTNET USER NAMES AND PASSWORDS ARE CASE SENSITIVE. They are
usually in all lower case.
- Keep the domain field blank.
- Click OK to begin the login.
You are now connected to the Internet via your PPP account with
WestNet. Windows NT is a 32 bit operating system so you should use the
"Windows 95" versions of whatever software you choose. If you have any
questions please feel free to contact WestNet's technical support at
staff@westnet.com or (914)-967-7816 during business hours.
