This is a brief tutorial on setting up PPP under OS/2 (TCP/IP 2.0 and Warp)
for use with WestNet Internet Services.
These instructions assume you must have either OS/2 Warp's TCP/IP or
TCP/IP version 2.0 installed on your machine. Consult your documentation
for help on installing these packages. If you are using TCP/IP 2.0, you
must also install all of the latest patches and CSDs from IBM. Please
consult the file readme.ppp for information on these patches. OS/2 Warp
4.0 should be up to date.
Instructions
- Open the TCP/IP Folder. There should be an Icon in it called 'Network
Dialer' (which runs a program called SlipPM.exe)
- Click on the icon labeled 'Add Entry'.
You should now be looking at a settings notebook with four pages. I will
now walk you through the four pages.
Name: westnet (must be in all lowercase)
Description: WestNet (just a more descriptive name)
Login ID: Enter the userID with which you registered with WestNet
in all lowercase
Password: Enter the password with which you registered with
WestNet. (If you leave this field blank, and leave the 'Required' box
checked, you will be prompted for a password each time you log in.)
Phone Number: Enter the phone number for your location and
modem:
Login Sequence: None
Connection Type: Check PPP
Inactivity Sequence: 15 (WestNet will log you out after 15 minutes
of inactivity anyway, so you might as well set it to 15 for a clean
shut-down)
Your IP Address: Leave blank
Destination IP Address: Leave blank
Net Mask: 255.255.255.0
MRU Size: 1500
VJ Compression: Check this option
Domain Nameserver: 206.24.6.2
Your Host Name: Type your host name here, which you will find on
your info letter. (This is usually the same as your userID.)
Your Domain Name: westnet.com
Default Servers/Hosts
News Server: news.westnet.com
Gopher Server: gopher.westnet.com
WWW Server: www.westnet.com
Mail Server Information
POP Mail Server: pop.westnet.com
Reply Domain: mail.westnet.com
Reply (Mail) ID: Enter your userID
POP Login ID: Enter your userID
POP Password: Enter your password
Modem Type: Select the type that most closely matches your
modem.
Com Port: Enter the com port where your modem is connected
Speed (Baud): Enter the fastest speed your modem can accept data.
This is usually faster than the speed of the modem. (For example, even
though I have a 14.4 kbps modem, I use a speed of 57600.)
Data Bits: 8
Parity: NONE
Prefix: ATDT - almost all modems use this string to do a touch-tone
dial. If you have to dial pulse, use "ATDP". If these don't work, look up the
dial string in your modem manual.
Initialization String 1 & 2: Use these to send any initialization
strings your modem needs. (My modem doesn't need any, yours might.)
Mode: Check Dial
Call Waiting: This is used to disable call waiting, if you have
it.
Close the settings notebook, clicking on Save when asked if you
want to save your options.
That's it! Click on Dial, and SlipPM should do the rest for you.
